July 19, 2007
Welcome,

Welcome
Thanks for joining us in this July '07 issue of our computer accounting newsletter. In this issue we'll focus on the new release of Peachtree v2008 accounting. By the way, if it seems like it's been a while since you received a newsletter from us, you are right - it has been a while. But please don't despair, we plan to publish more frequently in the future.

Peachtree News
Every year at about this time Sage Software releases a major upgrade to Peachtree and as expected, they are now shipping their most recent upgrade - the new 2008 version. For anyone who is still looking to obtain the older 2007 version, it is no longer being sold by Sage, however, if you are check with various retailers, you may find it available for a few more months.

This is Peachtree's second year using the new Pervasive Database. Peachtree versions 2006 and earlier were written in the Betrieve database. The new Pervasive is faster when large data files are being used and is less prone to data corruption. In case you're wondering about the database, Pervasive has a web site you can visit: http://www.pervasive.com/. Pervasive Software, Inc owns Btrieve and the Pervasive database program is an upgrade to the Btrieve.

Some of the major advantages of Peachtree 2008 over 2007 are the following: - Improved report options such as better filtering.
- Improved drill-down capability in reports.
- Easier forms design.
- Ability to add external files as attachments to customer, vendor, and employee records.
- Broadcast invoice feature which allows one invoice to be sent to many customers.
- Improved payroll Direct Deposit capability.

Peachtree Tips
The new 2007 and 2008 versions of Peachtree are different from prior versions in that each function selected in Peachtree opens in a different window, acting in some ways as if it were a totally different program. Suppose, for example, you open Maintain Customers, Maintain Vendors, and Maintain Employees. Now if you look at your Windows task bar, it will look like you have 3 seperate Peachtree programs running - but Peachtree itself is actually only running once, it's just that the various functions of Peachtree appear to be different Peachtree programs.

There are a couple of things about this. First, be sure not to have too many of these windows going at one time because it may slow down or even lock up your computer. If you aren't careful, you can end up with as many as 9 or more Peachtree windows open at the same time. This is more than most computers can easily handle. Generally, you'll want close some of these various windows when you get more than 5 or 6 that are open.

On a related note, I recently spoke with someone who had opened one of the Peachtree windows and they saw the Peachtree window they wanted on the task bar, but when they clicked into it, they could not access the screen. Closing and reopening Peachtree did not solve this problem. The solution was to right-click on window as it was listed in the task bar and choose Maximize. Suddenly the missing window appeared and was able to be used. If you ever have a similar problem, remember that Right-Click and Maximize should easily fix the problem.

Accounting Tips
Keeping debits and credits straight are an important part of accounting. Remember that:
- Expense amounts are normally Debits (Dr).
- Income amounts are normally Credits (Cr).
